First of all, my apologies for the delay in finalizing this and for its length! I think I needed this past week to internalize our ride such that remembering certain stories became a little more (emotionally) manageable. The Dead End Kids Motorcycle Club never ceases to amaze me: such a diverse group that can spend 72 hours (no really, 3 days x 24 hours per day… = 72!!!) and we don’t want to kill each other. We are a truly patient, understanding, and accepting group, and this makes us special. We must never lose that.

For those among us who served our country, whether you were with us in person, or in spirit, you were with us. This weekend was 100% about you, the commitment you made to our country and your love of the Red, White, and Blue. For that we thank you. Our ride and the fun we had, was merely a celebration of your heroism.

Saturday morning, the parking lot of Dragon Exhaust was filled with black, chrome, red, white, and blue. There was no doubt that we were about to embark on a patriotic ride; I for one could not have been more excited, and the American flag do-rag from my brother-in-law was tied securely to my handlebars. As we rode south to Cape May, countless vehicles pulled up along side us and gave us the thumbs up, or little kids waved or twisted their wrists to hear us rev our V-twins and flat-sixes. Whether they knew of our destination or they envied our “coolness” as bikers (read “motorcycle enthusiasts!!) their acknowledgement of our presence confirmed for me the need for us to represent the Dead End Kids Motorcycle Club in this ride to raise appreciation for both our veterans as well as our active duty heroes.

As expected, we had our dose of fun, be it in the atrium of the hotel during “open bar” or in Alexandria itself. However, what truly distinguished this ride from any other “weekend trip” we might have taken was the five hours we spent in the parking lot of the Pentagon, and the people we met. You see, there, we were on hallowed ground. Not only were we among some of our country’s heroes who had come from all over the country on their motorcycles to participate in the ride, but we were at the Pentagon. Home to the US Department of Defense, even the worst attack on our country this century could not destroy what was started sixty years (to the day) earlier. Badly bruised almost six years ago, today, this awesome structure stands strong. And yes, despite the opinion of a certain lady from Alabama, this is the same Pentagon “with the plane in it”… they just have gotten around to removing it!

Walking among those in the parking lot, I met many very interesting people. I’ll introduce you to some of the ones that made an impression on me. Corbitt and Jerissa are both teachers – perhaps in their late twenties. These two are just the kind of people you want teaching our kids. Sincere, articulate, caring, and they ride an ’03 Heritage Softail Classic in silver and black!

Cha is a Republic of Korea Marine (ROK Marine). During the Vietnam War, Cha fought along side the American Marines and as ROK Marines did during the war, he provided US marines with field intelligence. A little later I was speaking with a young marine in uniform (and when I say young, I mean pimples and peach fuzz!) and it dawned on me he needed to meet Cha. We walked over to Cha’s customized black ‘03 Road King and when the young Marine realized he was in the presence of a ROK Marine, his demeanor completely changed.

I stepped back to watch this inter-generational exchange; and it was a lesson of respect and understanding. While the young Marine didn’t exactly shoot to attention, he made sure he stood up straight; he understood the hero in whose presence he stood. His speech was refined and articulate as he asked Cha about his service and training (boot camp without boots!) When one of his Marine buddies, out of uniform, walked by, he stopped him to also meet Cha. Never mind his lack of uniform, Cha addressed these two boys (and they are boys!) as “Marine”, and to them, Cha was only, “Sir”. I don’t think I will ever truly understand how special it was to the young Marines to have met Cha. And perhaps vice-versa.

A 40-something couple stood by their motorcycle with laminated pictures of a very handsome young man around their necks. I asked them whether this soldier was their inspiration to participate in Rolling Thunder. Indeed it was, you see, the wife’s brother is one of our heroes from the war in Iraq. It was their intention to participate in the ride in his honor. As of a few weeks ago, it became, in his memory.

I’m sure you all saw the beautiful Softail Deluxe parked just in front of us. Light blue and white with matching helmets. That older couple was riding in memory of the husband’s best friend. Childhood friends, went to school together, and enlisted together, and served in Korea together. Unfortunately, they didn’t come home together. In fact, they didn’t even really fight together. The third day they were “over there”, he was killed. I was struck that this man, otherwise well groomed, and well spoken, on an obviously expensive motorcycle was wearing such a ratty and frayed old shirt from decades past. It turns out, it was his best friend’s favorite “civilian” shirt from “Sears Roebuck and Company”. He claimed it, and wore it for years in his friend’s memory. Now, because of its condition, it is worn but once or twice a year on special occasions, and then his wife carefully hand washes it and puts it away.

The ride through the Capital of our great country was a moving event. The streets were closed and sidewalks filled with people waving at us, trying to slap our hands, or trying to get us to rev our engines. What struck me were the signs that read “Thank You Rolling Thunder!” or “Thank You Bikers!” Are you kidding???

When we completed the run, we parked the bikes and walked through Thunder Alley where Mario purchased a vest, and Dr John and LA Lady a t-bag. I had a couple of patches sewn on my vest, and then I met Alex.

Alex is another one of our heroes from Iraq. He was there, with his wife and three year old daughter. The whole family was wearing Harley t-shirts and blue jeans, and Alex was wearing a “biker” vest completely covered with patches and pins, some paying tribute to the time he spent in active combat, the brothers he lost, and the great country he serves. It was so apparent to me, that Alex, a good looking 20-something year old man, is a Marine to his country, a father to his daughter, and a husband to his wife. “His girls” define him, and this event gave him the opportunity to celebrate his patriotism and bring attention to his brothers still “over there”. Alex is home because he is one of our combat wounded. This great Marine recently lost one of his legs above the knee. He was holding his daughter on his lap, and his wife was pushing his wheelchair. The smiles on their faces told the whole story: Daddy was home and that was all that mattered.

I was struck Sunday, that everyone with whom I spoke, considered it an honor to serve their country. To them, we are forever indebted. Thank you.

Sunday evening when we returned to the hotel, I could not find my parking pass. At the reception desk to get another, I stood on line behind a woman wearing a red jacket from the Harley Davidson dealership in Carson City, Nevada. She was there to inform the staff behind the desk that one of the lobby doors was not functioning properly. As she started away, she turned back and said, “As an English teacher, I must tell you there is an error on the sign in the drive way: the sign reads, ‘…longer then 10 minutes, and it should read, … longer than 10 minutes.’ ” She paused and waited for a reaction. “With an ‘a’ not an ‘e’,” she continued. Clearly over the clerk’s head, the red-jacketed woman walked away.

Shortly thereafter, the Dead End Kids were gathered in the atrium, this same white-haired woman was sitting to my right at the next table. I leaned over and asked whether she thought her grammar lesson was lost on the hotel employee. After a good chuckle, “Bea” proceeded to tell us (as JoAnne described in greater detail in her piece) that she was in town because her son had just retired from the Navy and she wanted to participate in Rolling Thunder with him. What she then told us was that this was her first motorcycle ride! She had the t-shirt, jacket, jeans, everything a biker needs! Including a tattoo! Yup. Bea, now 72 had a tattoo put above her ankle three years ago. Of what you ask? Well, a “bee” of course! Bea, you are one cool babe. And thank you for the lesson on how to pronounce Nevada!

Though so clearly proud of her son’s service, what Bea did not tell us was that her son was not just any Navy retiree. When she brought him over, some time later, we learned that Kirk was the Commander of the USS Cole, “the day of”. This great man, in both presence and stature, is soft-spoken and unassuming. When those among us reacted to hearing of his post, he spoke only of the heroism of his crew, and that they are the ones responsible for saving the ship. It is disturbing to me that Kirk, Bea, and their loved ones had to endure what we subsequently read through Scott’s research. To me this English teacher and mom, as well as her son the Navy Commander, are two more heroes to add to my collection from the trip.

Commander, we are proud to have met you and are grateful to you, your leadership, and your crew for your committed service to our country. Thank you.

For those looking through some of the pictures from Sunday night and Monday, you might notice a slight, long haired man. Minnesota Barry made the trip on his Ultra and joined us for drinks and dinner. He was there to see us off Monday morning, and was a lot of fun to know. I hope he’ll make the trip to Jersey and go for a ride with us one weekend. For him, there is a hero in our club, and her name is Elizabeth. She saved the cigar for his long trip home. ‘nuf said!

Lest we need a reminder of how great our country is, just think about this: Approximately 350,000 motorcycles from around the country gathered in our Capital to support those who chose to defend our country. And this does not take into consideration those who took time from their backyard barbeques to stand on the sidelines in support. Nor does it include those who were there in spirit. I am proud to be part of a club that participates in events like Rolling Thunder, and to have been able to experience this event with all of you. We are so much richer for having met the people we did this weekend. These folks represent the pillars of our country, and highlight what is truly important.

I will have this finished over the weekend. It's been a little tough reliving some of the stories from the Pentagon Parking lot. I should have called my voicemail from Mike's Famous as I said I would!

Scott, thank you for again leading an outstanding route. As I read your research on Kirk, it made me a little angry and upset - not condusive to writing. JoAnne, thank you for your beautiful piece; you nailed the humble personality of Kirk, as well as his proud mother. When we're all done, I'd like to send a copy of that to Bea.

Thanks to all of you for making my first (really) big bike event so special. Dr John and LA Lady - you were missed the whole way north; I had grown accustomed to your headlight in my rearview mirror. I'm embarassed that my efforts to stop the group failed. I'm sorry.

See you this weekend. We need to plan more weekend trips over the summer. Steve, you can be my roommate again - especially if you stay in another room!!!

A True Hero in our midst...

During our stay at the Embassy Suites we were privileged to meet a true American hero. While enjoying cocktails in the atrium we chanced to meet a lovely older lady named Bea. She and Peter struck up a conversation while she and her party were also enjoying the evening at a table adjacent to ours.

She informed us that she rode in the Rolling Thunder demonstration that day. Not only did she participate, it was her maiden voyage on a motorcycle! We all participated in the conversation as she was such a dynamic lady; a true inspiration.

Bea told us that she mounted her son’s Road King without letting him know that she had never ridden before. True grit. Bea hails from Carson City NV, an English teacher by trade. She shared her very own tattoo with us. Remarkable lady. I knew then that I would remember her always.

The very next morning we again met in the Atrium where she was joined by her son Kirk. I didn’t have the opportunity to personally speak with him, but he seemed genuinely proud of his mother and showed great affection for her. They both joined us for several pictures.

Peter will elaborate on Bea & Kirk as he had the most interaction with them, but what he told me later on gave me chills.

Kirk, a Navy man, with dreams of a pilot’s license (he wore a Cessna shirt) was the Commander of the USS Cole on the day of its attack. He spoke with true humility only of the courage and commitment of the sailors on that dark day and how they alone were responsible for saving the ship.

So of course Scott researched the event and Commander Kirk Lippold and turned up various links to what happened that day as well as what has happened since. Kirk has been denied promotion since 2002 despite JAG reports that he was not at fault. There is a site that explains this situation and what can be done. I for one, will download one of these letters and send to my state representatives. I think it’s worth the price of a few stamps to voice my outrage over this injustice.

Bangkok Thailand Trip - Part 2 Current mood: aggravated Category: Travel and Places
Ok let me get some more of the details of this trip down in writing before they get even more fuzzy, seems that the drinking I did while in BKK was way too heavy for even my standards. Good thing I was travelling with a few guys who are not drinkers; that is not strictly true becuase I never really get too drunk to remember what I am doing. But anyway, back to the details....First things first - posted the pictures of the trip online here - Bangkok - Thailand. Not a whole lot of pictures of me and really not much to photograph for the majority of the trip until the last day when I did some real sightseeing. All, by the way in the span of about 3 or 4 hours as I got up way too late that day as well. Oh yeah, one other thing just as a quick note - the hospitality at the Davis Bangkok was really great. Thanks to Annie and all the other girls at "Club 88" for making us feel welcome throughout the stay.So where do we want to start today - several things we wanted to talk about, but I guess I should start at the beginning (and talk about patpong later on). First night we arrived we went out to meet some local friends at one of the local hot spots called Royal City Avenue or RCA. It is basically a whole street of nightclubs or all varieties, all colorfully lit and all really, really crowded. Most of the clubs have outdoor seating and many people hang out outside the clubs at the tables because it is entirely too crowded inside. The music is much louder inside than outside so you might actually be able to hear what your friends are saying if you stay outside. Oh yeah, bring some ID because it is required to gain entrance into all the clubs. I will put the location down here becuase I really love the addresses in Bangkok - completely indecipherable to anyone - Rama 9, and Taurus in Soi 24 Sukhumvit. Good luck finding it if you don't know where to go and if you can't get a cab driver who understands English (not all do). The two clubs we went to were called Flix and Slim. One club played house and the other Hip-Hop, outside there was a live band playing Thai music - so all in all not a bad place to party. Interestingly enough what I learned about RCA is that local girls dont really like to hang out at these places - because there are TOO many girls there. Those of you single guys remember that as it is a very important lesson in your young development.The next place we hit after we left RCA was another local club called Glow. This place boasts 'the largest selection of vodka's in Bangkok'. But to be perfectly honest, I didn't even know they had vodka, at least nobody played that fact up at all. The place was very quite compared to the clubs at RCA and in fact the only people in the club were the owner and the workers. You of course had the pre-requisite "Thai girls dancing on the bar" but other than that the place was really quite. Again - anther fact that my young apprentices must remember, something I will now call "Tony's Number One Rule of Life" - Thai girls dancing on bars is a very, very good thing. Apologies to all my female friends - I know some of you might be upset by that statement, but I do stand by it whole heartedly. And if you don't believe me just give me the opportunity to prove it.One good point to the above listed nightclubs listed above is the lack of 'the dark' side of Bangkok. For the most part until this point in the trip I had not seen one discernable "lady boy" or "professional." Please note - I said discernable, this doesn't mean they werent around but I just didn't notice any. By this point of the morning it was around 2am the time that most clubs close in Bangkok. I did find a few other clubs open later - but these were basically filled with the dark elements. I cant remember the name of the first club, but the second was the 'only' after-hours disco in BKK, called Boss. Few locals and quite a few girls working late into the night (please read between the lines). I stayed at that place for several hours, after all it was a late night disco, and then returned to the hotel. By this point it was 6:30am and some of the guys decided to head for breakfast before sleeping. Those who know me realize this is not my style and I just retired for the night.The second and third nights in BKK basically blend into one for me after this point. I can't really remember what happenend when or why or where, maybe the alcohol or maybe the late nights mixed with too much sleep during the day. Some of the rest of this may get a little strange for some of you so read on at your own risk. The next few nights basically included seeing the sights that BKK is famous for - including such things as "Ping Pong Shows" (yes it is what you think it is) and other assorted strange things that people will do for money. Yes, I know this isn't right and morally I am opposed to all such behaviour, but in order for me to oppose it I have to experience and understand it. Right? So yes, the ping pong balls go where they are not supposed to go and get 'shot' across the room. One note to anyone venturing in for the fist time -DONT SIT IN THE FRONT ROWTwo reasons for this last statement 1). You don't really want to see it, and 2). you might get hit with something you don't want to get hit with or that you that shouldn't have been there in the first place. Let me tell you an interseting story:So we go into this place not really sure what to expect but intrigued none-the-less. We are offered watered down beer in glasess not pints or bottles, just random glasses. By the way, dont ever drink beer out or a glass in Bangkok - please take note I will tell you later. So what do I actually see in this place but girls (hard to dispute in this case) using their privates for random assorted household tasks: opening bottles, blowing out candles, storing their 2 dozen odd razor blades (yes, razor blades), shooting darts, transferring coke from one bottle to another, storring their athletic equipment (ping pong balls and the like) and playing catch with fruit. How do you play catch with fruit you might ask, well silly you put it in there and then you shoot it out and catch it, repeat several times. Then for your finale put the fruit back in and shoot it out into the audience. The only part of this trick is you should be able to find it after you shoot it into the audenience. In this one particular case the game turned into a magic trick as the fruit actually disappeared. The actress/performer tried to locate the fruit after it went into the audience only to determine that it had vanished into thin air. This is the birth of the nickname - "banana ass" - because you see, the banana although thought to have vanished into mid air was actually stuck to the ass of one of my friends - who will forever be known as BA or banana ass. How it actually got there we have no idea - true story.Oh yeah, why don't you ever want to drink beer from a glass in Bangkok - becuase as I realized on the way out, the bartender, the guy washing the glases and pouring the beer, was actually the performer in the "live" version of this particular sex show. Groowwss! The one last observation of these two nights is the club scene in Patpong. So these are not really clubs but more like 'go-go' bars filled, I mean filled with Thai girls dancing on the bars, so many in fact that they don't all fit on the stages. In one club I counted 60 barely dressed beautiful women dancing lustfully for everyone's enjoyment. Just remember that Bangkok is known as the city where you can get "the finest counterfit everything" and I suspect this includes the women. Yes they are not all real, but remember and never forget rule number 1 - "Thai girls dancing on bars is a good thing", the only caveat being if you can't tell that they are not really girls then does it really matter? Just enjoy!All in all my observations of Bangkok - go there if you can. It is a must see place, go there many times it is all good fun. Just be sure to stay alert and keep your wits about you at all times.

Bangkok Thailand Trip - Part 1 Current mood: sleepy Category: Travel and Places
Was off to Bangkok Thailand last weekend and wanted to post some comments on the activities of the weekend. I will post the pictures on Kodak Gallery with the rest of the pictures of my travels once I upload them. I know I should be using flickr, but since I started with Kodak Gallery I will just leave then there for now.The trip was planned for Friday January 12 until Tuesday January 16th Singapore time. Thailand is 1 hour behind Singapore, but that is irrelevant at this point. Three of my friends from Singapore came along for the ride and really I was thankfull since two had actually been to Bangkok and knew their way around. I do have one friend that I met in Singapore, Ann, who resides in Bangkok and we did meet up with her and her friends one night. Unfortunately she was ill and was not able to party with us for too much over the weekend as she needed to rest and recouperate for an upcoming business trip starting - I think, today. Thanks to Ann and her friends for hanging out with us and good luck on your trip.Two of the guys decided to fly on a budget airline - Air Asia and me and the other decided to travel on Thai Airways - myself because I need to collect the frequent flyer miles and my friend because he booked last minute. The two who travelled on airasia had no issues - we on the other hand, on the 'non-budget' airline almost died. Yeah, you heard that right - we almost "almost" died.During the flight there was some major malfunction - I think the plane was hit by lightning. For those of you who have never experienced this there is a huge - I mean huge, very lound boom accompanied by a bright flash of light and the smell of burning. The plane lurches and drops a few hundred feet while listing toward the side that got hit. Yeah, imagine what you would think it would be like if the engine blew up and the plane was breaking into a thousand pieces. That is what it feels like. Very scary - and this happenend about 10 minutes after take off so you could imagine how the rest of the flight was. Thai airlines is not all it is cracked up to be - certainly not much better than a budget flight. The plane was archaic and the food was horrendous - sorry Thai Airways, I mean no disrespect, but the flight was really bad. But I did get about 1000 frequent flyer miles - big deal! I could have saved the $100S and bought about that many miles and flew on the discount flight. Although, it did come in handy at the end of the trip. My original flight was booked for 11am on Tuesday although I couldn't wake up and changed it to 1pm at the last minute. Not sure if I would have been able to do that on the budget flight.After such an exciting flight I needed some heavy duty liquor - once on the ground - couldn't even think of drinking after that experience (minus one can of Singha to get myself in the mood). When we landed at the new Airport in Thailand, Suvarnabhumi Airport we were greeted on the tarmac and brought to the terminal via bus. Not sure why the regions biggest and newest airport isn't using their arrival terminal, but whatever. You have to love Thailand and the love of their King - that is the first thing you notice, the new airport, as is almost everything in Thailand is covered with images of King Bhumibol Adulyadej .The airport is the largest in the world and you really get that feeling when you are there - I mean the terminals are absolutely huge. And the immigration lines were really manageable except for the 'Visa on Arrival' which was extremely under staffed. All in all, the experience so far was not that bad - although again my cell phone didn't work and that really frustrates me.

In the aftermath of the famous court decision in the case of Stella Liebeck vs. McDonald's for injury suffered when she spilled hot coffee on herself comes the infamous 'STELLA AWARD'. Here are cases that are in contention for the award. You're the jury now. You will laugh at each one and you should probably cry at them collectively if you have any hope and/or respect for our judicial system. Keep in mind that these decisions have now set precident and can be use as the basis for future decisions. Scarey or what??

TO WHICH JURY DECISION WOULD YOU GIVE THE COVETTED 'STELLA AWARD'?

1. January 2000: Kathleen Robertson of Austin Texas was awarded $780,000 by a jury after breaking her ankle tripping over a toddler who was running inside a furniture store. The owners of the store were understandably surprised at the verdict,considering the misbehaving little bastard was Ms. Robertson's son.

2. June 1998: A 19 year old Carl Truman of Los Angeles won $74,000 and medical expenses when his neighbor ran over his hand with a Honda Accord. Mr. Truman apparently didn't notice there was someone at the wheel of the car, when he was trying to steal his neighbor's hubcaps.

3. October 1998: A Terrence Dickson of Bristol, Pennsylvania was leaving a house he had just finished robbing by way of the garage. He was not able to get the garage door to go up since the automatic door opener was malfunctioning. He couldn't re-enter the house because the door connecting the house and garage locked when he pulled it shut. The family was on vacation. Mr. Dickson found himself locked in the garage for eight days. He subsisted on a case of Pepsi he found,and a large bag of dry dog food. He sued the homeowner's insurance claiming the situation caused him undue mental anguish. The jury agreed to the tune of half a million dollars.

4. October 1999: Jerry Williams of Little Rock, Arkansas was awarded $14,500 and medical expenses after being bitten on the buttocks by his next door neighbor's beagle. The beagle was on a chain in it's owner's fenced-in yard. The award was less than sought because the jury felt the dog might have been just a little provoked at the time by Mr. Williams who was shooting it repeatedly with a pellet gun.

5. May 2000: A Philadelphia restaurant was ordered to pay Amber Carsonof Lancaster, Pennsylvania $113,500 after she slipped on a soft drink and broke her coccyx. The beverage was on the floor because Ms. Carson threw it at her boyfriend 30 seconds earlier during an argument.

6. December 1997: Kara Walton of Claymont, Delaware successfully sued the owner of a night club in a neighboring city when she fell from the bathroom window to the floor and knocked out her two front teeth. This occurred while Ms Walton was trying to sneak through the window in the ladies room to avoid paying the $3.50 cover charge. She was awarded $12,000 and dental expenses.

7. November 2000: Mr Merv Grazinski of Oklahoma City purchased a brand new 32 foot Winnebago motor home. On his first trip home, having joined the freeway, he set the cruise control at 70 mph and calmly left the drivers seat to go into the back and make himself a cup of coffee. Not surprisingly the Winnie left the freeway, crashed and overturned. Mr Grazinski sued Winnebago for not advising him in the handbook that he couldn't actually do this. He was awarded $1,750,000 plus a new Winnie. (Winnebago actually changed their handbooks on the back of this court case, just in case there are any other complete morons buying their vehicles.)

The NRF survey found that 3.78 million children plan to dress up as a princess this Halloween. Other popular costume include Star Wars characters), witches and Spiderman. Witches, vampires and costumes based on actors and famous people were the most popular choices for adults. The survey found that over 50% percent of consumers plan to buy a costume for Halloween and that consumers will spend $31.88 on average for their costume. Halloween is the 6th largest spending holiday of the year bringing in an estimated $3.3 billion this holiday. Here are top kids and adults costumes according the NRF survey.

The Little Girl and the Biker

Alone she sat with the host on a stage in a television studio.  Eight year old Karlie was in a room filled with strangers but showed no fear.  She had so much more to fear as darkness was about to fill her world, but even that did not shake her.  Karlie has a degenerative eye disease and soon her vision will be gone forever.  Her mother’s death left her and her father alone in life.

She’s sweet, soft spoken and a very shy little one in a blue print dress, and shiny shoes.  Blonde hair and freckles adorn her nose that supports a thick pair of glasses.  She talks to the host about her Daddy and how well he cares for her.  It’s obvious she is loved witnessed by her manners and appearance.

She is going blind.  She is well aware that her Daddy will fade from sight.  She is there that day to ask for a makeover for her father.  Karlie’s Daddy is a biker.  They summon her father to join them on the stage.  The curtain moves to reveal a tall man wearing a well-worn pair of jeans, boots and a black leather vest.  His beard touches his chest, tattoos cover his arms and his hair is a long tumble of wavy blonde hair.  He is every bit the stereo-typical “biker”.  His smile broadens as he nears Karlie, comes to rest by her side and hugs her.

Karlie has never seen her Daddy look any other way.  His tradesman vocation affords him the freedom to a relaxed appearance.  Karlie wishes for a view of her father in a more traditional style.  She has come to ask for a makeover for her Dad.  He is hesitant and a bit timid that he may suffer ridicule from associates and buddies, but Karlie’s request fades all hesitancies.

Off he is taken for his new look.  The time spent during his transformation fades away and he stands behind a curtain once more awaiting his daughter’s reaction.  Foremost is the knowledge that his little girl will soon live in darkness for the remainder of her days.  No price is too high for the sight of her smile for this crusty biker.  The curtain is once more moved to reveal a tall suited and well groomed executive looking man.  He looks as if he just stepped from a corporate board room.  All that fades as you see the amazement on the face of a sweet little girl who sees her Dad for the very first time without the long hair, beard and biker regalia.  It was the princess seeing her Prince Charming for the very first time.  His smile was just as broad as before but her smile lit up the room.

They were taken by limousine to a swanky NY restaurant for a very special “biker – daughter” luncheon and for a little girl to learn from her Prince Charming about sacrifice and the power of love.

Take the ride again and re-live the feeling of the day. The police escort mentioned in the directions was arranged for us by “Lt. Willy” and went beyond our wildest dreams. We were police escorted all the way to the center of Jockey Hollow, step #10.

Welcome to “The Ride and Roast for Bones”…
a joint effort of DRAGON EXHAUST and the DEAD END KIDS MOTORCYCLE CLUB. We thank you for coming today.

John Mc Nellis (“Bones”) is a valuable friend of DRAGON EXHAUST. Bones was also one of the driving forces behind the creation of the Dead End Kids Motorcycle Club this past spring. We therefore find it our duty to help him and his wife Mary through this difficult time in their lives as a result of his motorcycle accident here in Morristown back in June. We are honored that you have joined us and we thank you for your contribution to our fund for Bones and Mary and your presence at our event. We hope that you enjoy the ride and have some roast pig with us afterwards.

The ride you are about to embark upon is about 100 miles in length and should take between 3 and 4 hours to complete. It will start and end at DRAGON EXHAUST. The roads are, for the most part, in good to very good condition. Some have been paved very recently (enjoy!!). Along several segments of the route, the roads are a bit narrow but throughout the course, the visibility is very good. It will be an unescorted ride (with possible exception around The Green in Morristown). We will do what we can at intersections to hopefully prevent any possible problems. Left turns are few and there are traffic lights at busy intersections.

It will be your responsibility to take all necessary safety precautions while riding. Maintain a safe distance between your bike and those around you. Please ride in a stagger pair formation and make adjustments where narrower roads dictate. Try to keep gaps in our line from opening up which could allow cars to become trapped in our formation causing a potential hazard to visibility and to a safe travel distance between vehicles. This isn’t a race. There will be plenty for everyone to eat at the end of the ride. Besides, undercooked pork is unhealthy for you so you’ll have to wait for it anyway.

In the event you can’t hold out until the end of the run to eat and drink something, we will be stopping at an Exxon station with an “On The Run” store for your convenience at roughly the 2/3 point or about 65 miles. Figure 15 to 20 minutes unless it is obvious that more time should be allowed. Although the ride should easily be completed on one tank of gas for pretty much any size bike (and hopefully you filled up before coming this morning), feel free to gas up during the break as quickly as you can. We gather there will be facilities there for your use if you need them.

We hope you enjoy the ride. Plotting out the route and riding it a couple times during the past week has been fun and very enjoyable for us. We hope you agree. See you back at the ‘Dead End’.

Leaving DRAGON EXHAUST parking lot

RIGHT on John Street

Traffic light at Ridgedale Ave. Turn Left.

Traffic light at Lafayette Ave. Turn Right

Under Railroad bridge, bare Right at light on Morris Ave.

Bear left at light and up hill to The Green

One and ½ revolutions around The Green (we may have a police escort here)

Traffic light turn Right on Washington Ave

Turn Left at Western Ave

Western Ave through entrance to Jockey Hollow

Jog left by ‘No Entrance’ sign.

Left at Stop sign

Left to exit park at Tempe Wick exit

Right onto Tempe Wick

Left onto Cory Lane (house with railroad tie retainer wall at corner)

At triangle, bear Left onto Hilltop Road CAUTION

At triangle, bear left onto Bernardsville Road CAUTION

Note: Bernardsville Road changes name to Mendham Road

Note: Mendham Road changes name to Anderson Hill Road

Come to light at Route 202 (large park like triangle)

Make Right onto Route 202 (south bound)

Caution at Rail Road crossing

DO NOT MAKE TURN WHERE ROUTE 202 sharply turns left. Continue straight to light at Route 206.

Cross Route 206 onto Lamington Road (Route 523)

After several miles make Right onto Black River Road

Bear left at intersection in town staying on Black River Road

At intersection of Pottersville Road bear Left

Cross river via grated bridge onto Route 512 (pass Pottersville General Store on your left)

Follow Route 512 (Fairmount Rd) up hill to stop sign at Route 517. See signs for Tewksbury

Make Left onto Route 517

Continue traveling due south on Route 517. You will pass the end of Lamington Road on your left. Route 517 ends here. Changes to Route 523 (continuation of Lamington Road).

Turn Right onto Rockaway Road and enter the Wildlife Reserve. If you reach Route 78 interchange, turn around and make left into reserve.

This road winds around quite a bit so be prepared.

Continue along Rockaway Road careful at jog crossing river, narrow bridge.

Cross Pottersville Road

At fork, bear Left onto Bissell Road. Narrow road take care

Travel on Bissell Road to its end and turn Left onto Cokesbury Road

CATCH THE VIEW as you are coming out of the woodlands!!!!!

Cross over Route 78

Come down hill to traffic light at Route 22

Turn Right onto Route 22

Travel west on Route 22 to the jug handle for ROUND VALLEY ACCESS ROAD

Cross Route 22 onto Round Valley Access Rd. Pass by Round Valley Recreation Area (traveling on Route 629)

Travel Route 629 Enjoy the scenery!!!

At the stop sign make a Right onto Route 523

Within first mile of Route 523 look to your right. See the BUFFALO in the pasture

Continue on Route 523. (Building on left with large blue letters “DEK” is not the clubhouse of Dead End Kids MC)

Come up to light on Route 31

Make Right onto Route 31. Light road construction here, take care.

Travel north on Route 31. Cross over Route 22, cross under Route 78.

Watch for EXXON gas station on right with the On The Run Store BREAK TIME 15-20 minutes

Shortly after getting back on Route 31 we will exit to the Right onto Route 513 towards High Bridge. At end of ramp off Route 31 turn Right

Follow Route 513 through High Bridge

CAREFULL several tight turns both before and after center of town.

Pass NJ Transit High Bridge station to your left and make sharp Right turn up hill.

CAUTION: YOU DO NOT HAVE THE RIGHT OF WAY HERE, blind road on your right as you prepare to make Left turn.

Make Left turn and climb up the hill

Once you climb the hill and see Voorhees State Park on your left, easy riding for quite awhile. DEER COMMON THROUGH HERE.

Continue on Route 513 into Chester

Cross Route 206

Continue through town of Chester

You are also on Route 24 that will turn sharply to the right at a light.

GO STRAIGHT continuing on Route 513

Continue on Route 513 and watch for double green road name sign PLEASANT HILL ROAD and CALAIS ROAD

Turn Right onto Calais Road

Take Calais Road to stop sign at its end

Turn Right onto Sussex Pike

Remain on Sussex Pike into Morris Township

See community pool on your Left coming up to light at Mill Street

Right onto Mill Street

Bones’ house on your left #

Come to traffic light at Washington Ave

Make Left onto Washington Ave

Gone is the holiday euphoria and I am reminded once more, it is here again. That disheartening time of year when most bikers remove their warm weather loves from the road and park them in the garage, on the porch and for the even more devoted, in the kitchen.
The Valkyrie was winterized and raised on the lift when winter beat back the rider and brought forth the “season of our discontent.” Plans for the upcoming riding season were the first order of business, Laconia being our first choice. Scott being an avid camper, we decided to stay at Gunstock where several events would be close.
To prepare for a 10-day camping trip with only a motorcycle seemed an unachievable task when it suddenly became the cure for Scott’s winter blues. Sleeping, cooking, eating and transporting the requirements for the trip became our sole focus as the weather played with our heads. Warm sunny days, post Thanksgiving, told Scott that the bike was stowed much too soon.
We ordered trunk and saddlebag racks, made reservations and brainstormed about preserving space our focus to making this trip a reality and combat against the dreaded winter blues. This was no throw the bedroll on the back of the bike and sleep in the open-air kind of trip. This was the deluxe tour package. From the ground cover and air mattress to the cooler to keep food, we had all the necessities for outdoor living.
One quick weekend camping trip in early spring told us that we had fine-tuned the formula and were ready to go. The excitement welled in us as the day drew near. Arriving at Laconia Bike Week early gave no indication of the total insanity that was about to happen. We arrived at Gunstock and having rehearsed set-up went right to work as a seasoned team. Within a very short time our home away from home, for 10 days at least, was complete. This is coming from a girl who always thought that staying at the Hilton was camping.
Having never attended a motorcycle event, Laconia gave me an instant education. Just making our way to the lake area, so many things that I had never before seen filled my eyes. I delighted in the visuals of multitudes of every kind of two and sometimes three wheeled vehicles, throngs of people and incredible countryside. Wheelies! Stoppies! Burnouts! Entertainment was at every turn of the head. It was nearly overload.
The campsite contained all the comforts of home (within reason). One morning while hanging our towels to dry and cooking breakfast a fellow camper happened by. We exchanged greetings and he moved on only to stop in his tracks, turn, and ask the question we felt summed it all up for beating the winter doldrums that year…”Um, where’s your chase vehicle?” “You didn’t bring all that stuff on a motorcycle.” We looked at each other and smiled, knowing it was all in the preparation.
